Panel Discussion – Aging In Prisons

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aAEHdEGrp4&feature=youtu.be

On Thursday evening, April 11th, the Student Alliance for an Aging Society (SAAS) at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College hosted a panel discussion on an increasingly visible and challenging issue: aging in prisons.

The panel provided a diverse angle on this topic, as the panelists represent varied viewpoints and careers related to aging: journalism, academia, social work, policy, and community-based practice. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Caroline Gelman, Chair of the Aging Field of Practice at Silberman School of Social Work.

Panelists included:

Dr. Tina Maschi of Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service and principal investigator for the research project, “Trauma, coping resources, and well-being among older adults in prison”

Sean Pica, Executive Director of Hudson Link, a higher education organization serving incarcerated individuals, and a Senior Fellow with Mercy College’s Center for Social and Criminal Justice

Pam Belluck, journalist for the New York Times  who recently published the article “Life, With Dementia” (article: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/26/health/dealing-with-dementia-among-aging-criminals.html).

Reducing Risk and Saving Lives: Suicide Prevention Among Older Adults

Friday, Dec 7, 2012 | 9am-3:30pm

Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College

For questions about this event, email gholzheimer@mhaofnyc.org or call (212) 614-5753

Older adults are at greater risk for suicide than many other age groups. The good news is that people working with elders in aging service programs, mental health agencies, health care settings and social service organizations can identify warning signs and help older adults overcome painful suicidal ideation and lead more fulfilling lives.

Join us for a day-long symposium to learn about suicide among older adults from nationally renowned experts on geriatric mental health and suicide prevention. Participants will also take part in workshops where they will learn to spot warning signs of suicide, help older adults plan for their safety and connect older adults with community resources.

This symposium is generously supported by the Altman Foundation,  FJC: A Foundation of Philanthropic Funds, and the New York State Office of Mental HealthCo-Sponsored by the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging
